I’ve never considered myself to be a good writer. I had zero experience when starting and have never taken a creative writing course or any professional writing course. I see my writing as a way to just do whatever I want. I try to write in my own style and way, believing that someone somewhere will enjoy it. As I wrote the Oscar Pat series, my writing definitely improved. However, I still truly cannot say that it is great. I struggled a lot with writing this book, and I almost scrapped the whole thing multiple times. It was only through accepting that I wasn’t going to write the masterpiece of my dreams that I was able to release it.
Some people won’t release something unless it is perfect. Unless they are happy with it. Of course, that is perfectly fine; I’m like that sometimes. But I also think that there is benefit in releasing things that don’t meet a standard you haven’t shown. I’ve never had a book or release become a “hit”; because of this, I’m setting the standard at my own pace. I’m writing what I think is good and what others may enjoy. If I didn’t do it that way, I’d have released zero books.
Even if my books aren’t up to Shakespeare’s standard, someone will enjoy them and find them interesting. There are many stories about writers and musicians who only became famous after death.
The present doesn’t define the standard; the future does.
Anyway, Oscar Pat 5.
Before I continue, be warned there are some spoilers for the entire Oscar Pat Book Series.

If I could rewrite it, would I? Most likely.
What would I do differently? Probably everything.
To me, the Oscar Pat series is one of my favourites. I think it showcases its characters really well. Oscar’s journey is one I’m especially proud of. Brandon is probably my favourite character I’ve written.
But this book had a troubled history. I hated a lot of this book. I struggled time and time again to write it. I constantly deleted my notes and constantly changed my mind on how it should all play out. This was the final book. Book 5. It had to be epic. It had to be cool.
I thought that it shouldn’t be slow, it should always have something exciting going on. But that made it feel rushed. It made some parts not make sense.
It created plot holes and characters that didn’t feel right.
So, to get over this, I just wrote.
I didn’t try to create the perfect I speak of above. I knew I couldn’t.
I set a deadline, and then wrote whatever I could.
If I didn’t, I would have scrapped hundreds of pages to rewrite the entire thing.
I didn’t have time for that. My life was super busy at the time. I had a lot going on that I couldn’t afford to focus on the book for the rest of my life.
There were a lot of things to cover in this book, and if I overthought it all, it would probably end up being worse than if I just wrote what my mind and heart were truly aiming for with this story.
Next, let’s cover something.
(The below was written on June 23rd 2022, during the development of the book)
I was watching The Umbrella Academy season 3, and I worried that the ending was similar to the ending of Oscar Pat 5, luckily, not too similar. I can see the similarities, but let me explain.
As of June 20th 2022, Oscar Pat 5 has only 2 or 3 chapters left to write. The final pieces were set up long ago. I’m not saying The Umbrella Academy copied me or I copied them, but if you thought there were similarities between the two, then it is purely coincidental.
There are also some similarities between the ending of Oscar Pat 5 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. But if you know the bit I’m referring to, then you may also know that it is more common than you think. Having a character or main characters forget each other is surprisingly common, especially in Japanese Anime/Manga.

Overall, Oscar Pat 5 is a decent book. I will have to reread it to know if I’m correct or not, but I don’t want to say that I’m done with the Oscar Pat Universe. I want to come back to that world and tell another story or two. Something I think people will want to see, and something very unexpected.
Even to this day (I’m writing this bit in 2026), I like the Oscar Pat books. I’ve recently given all 5 to a friend to read, he hasn’t started reading them, but when he does, I’m curious to hear what he thinks.
The books are old. The first and second are probably very different to my current style, but I don’t mind. It shows I’m getting better. It shows that I’ve improved.
Artists change style all the time; same with musicians.
Why can’t writers?
