Three-Part Harmony – Screenplay excerpt

a messy music room of a school with sheet music on the floor. A guitar and drum kit against the wall and a piano by the door

Originally, Three Part Harmony started as a screenplay. The first draft of the first episode started in 2025, and eventually, after failing to write a screenplay, I turned it into a book that was released in 2026. If you want to find out about the novel, you can check the Novels section of this blog.

I have never written a screenplay before. I tried to format it based on what I could find about other screenplays; I mainly used Doctor Who ones, which you can find on the BBC’s website. There are probably a lot of things that I could do better or differently, but this is a piece of history. So, here it is to leave its mark on the world.

This is only a very short part of the full thing (with some slight modifications to make it suitable for the blog). Maybe one day I’ll post the full thing

The camera is panned down against the concrete ground on an autumn day. Baggy jean legs, in dark trainers, walk into view, almost skipping in their step. The camera jumps to the side of the walking character, PARK SUTTON. 16, witty, charismatic, dreamer. Park skips down the street with his large over-ear headphones on, listening to a song. He hums along as he passes people by, approaching the school gates as the teachers are waiting outside the gates for him, stopping him from entering. The music stops.

TEACHER

Headphones…

PARK sighs as he rips them off his head, folding them down and into his side school bag. He smiles at the teacher, almost cheekily and sarcastically, proceeding to walk past with his hands deep into his jean pockets. The camera follows Park, not wanting to waste time on the random school kids that occupy the area, talking and messing about with their friends. The music has stopped, we only hear real life.

In a seamless transition, we move from the outside to the inside, still following PARK, who is moving almost to a beat. The classrooms are full as Park walks into his, stopping under the doorway. We are introduced to Park’s Form Room teacher, MISS RACHEL MONROE, Late 20s – early 30s. Young, caring, but also a naive English teacher.

RACHEL MONROE

Are you joining us?

(Beat)

PARK

Nope. But I am here!

MONROE rolls her eyes as her head falls back into her computer whilst the rest of the class talk. The camera returns to PARK, who ends up in the school’s music room. He jumps right behind the piano, lifting up the cover as he reaches down to find various sheet music off the floor. We are introduced to PARK’S fellow musician friends. The first is drummer PATRICK HEBERT, who currently sits behind the drum kit. 16, sarcastic and enjoys life with his carefree attitude.

PATRICK

Morning, Park.

PARK

Morning. What we starting with?

PATRICK

Leo’s going to be late, just start with whatever.

(Beat)

You hopping on Vocals?

PARK

Can do.

Park stands up from behind the piano, throwing whatever music he had on the ground to set up a microphone. He moves the stand to sit just above the keys of the Piano where he can play and sing. He plans to forget everything and wing it.

PARK (CONT’D)

What you thinking? Billie Jean? Seven Nation Army? Maybe some King Crimson?

PATRICK

Do you know what my favourite month and year is?

PARK

(Excitedly)

December 1963! A good one.

(Beat)

Let’s do it.

Without missing a beat, PATRICK starts playing the drum part for Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, December 1963. PARK jumps in with the piano and the vocals. The two enjoy themselves, jamming out in a world of their own. The camera flashes between them as they are enjoying their own moment, no one can disturb them. The camera cuts to the Title Card. Various cuts show the band and random students entering a hallway, moving down to the school’s hall. But before they can get up to the second verse, they are interrupted by their friend and guitarist, LEO COPLAND, 16, who anxiously enters.

LEO

Terrible news!

PARK and PATRICK roll their eyes with annoyance as they look to their friend.

PARK

What?

LEO

The Headmistress wants us to perform an assembly for the whole school.

PATRICK

(Uncaring but curious)

What?

PARK

(Reasonable and understanding)

We can’t do that. We’ve hardly practised.

LEO

Don’t question me about it, go up and talk to her if you want. But she said, and I quote:

Leo does his best impression, intimidating the headmistress with a deep feminine voice.

LEO (CONT’D)

‘You’ve had the whole of half term to practise, if you cannot put on a performance for the assembly, then I’ll close down your club…’

PARK and PATRICK turn to each other, mortified.

PATRICK

Can she do that?

LEO

She can because Park is failing his exams (beat)

Again…

PARK

But the deal was that I’d pass my

final exams, not my mocks.

LEO

(getting uneasy with anxiety)

She doesn’t care for that deal. She’s changed it. We never signed a contract… We should have signed a contract.

PATRICK

Well, let’s just do the assembly.

LEO

(Snapping)

No! We should let Park perform alone. Go on, Park, it’s time to debut as a soloist. All great bands do this eventually.

LEO (CONT’D)

(mumbling as he tries to pull PARK off the piano)

Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Harry Styles, The Beatles, tons of them.

PATRICK

Actually, I agree. Have fun, Park.

PARK tilts his head down to the piano as he tries to think of a way to get out of this. Silence fills the music room as we see all three of them awkwardly doing nothing. LEO is still trying to pull at PARK’S clothes, waiting for PARK. Until the silence is broken.
