The Gears in the Shadows is the third instalment in the Oscar Pat series and was quickly released a few months after the second.
So, to follow up on the last post, let’s talk about the third book in the Oscar Pat series.
Before I jump in, as always there will be spoilers for Oscar Pat: The gears in the shadows, if you wish to check out the Oscar Pat Series, there is a link to the Amazon page for all the books:

From now on Oscar Pat: The gears in the shadows will be referred to as Oscar Pat 3.
Alright, let’s begin.
To start, Oscar Pat 3 is very different from the others because it doesn’t really feature much of our main protagonist, Oscar.
This is because Oscar is dealing with the consequences of, once again, disobeying orders. But that’s ok because it means we get to have a look at our other characters. Our other characters get the time to shine along with some new additions that have been waiting for their time to shine. This book gives us a look at our villains, the Legion, along with its members and a returning guest.
This book sets up a lot!
A lot happens and there’s a lot going on. As the title suggests, the gears are starting to move in the shadows, as the world starts to fall.
But enough about the plot, you’re here for the fun facts about writing it or random knowledge.
So, let’s speak about Fi’s past.
Fi was always going to have the past she does, there were no plans to change it. She was one Brandon speaks about in the first book, an ability user abandoned by GPS and her story is tragic. We also get to see why she was so worried about Howard Peters at the end of the second book.
It’s all starting to come together. The plot starts to fall into place, and things mentioned in books one and two start to all reveal themselves. You could say it’s some great plot I’ve had planned since the start, and you’d be wrong. I kinda winged it mostly. I knew a lot of the key events that would occur but didn’t really know much after that.
Originally, I struggled to come up with what to write. I wasn’t certain what direction I wanted things to go in, and the reason for that was book-length. I try to make all books around 200 pages, but this isn’t about book-length, but more series length. Oscar Pat will be 5 books. It always was going to be, and I needed to somehow make this book go into whatever book 4 would be and not have book 4 be the last.
The rough contents of book 5 have existed since early on, probably around halfway through book 2 if not before book 2 even started. And there was too much I wanted to fit in that I struggled to figure out how to make it flow without ‘rushing’ to what would happen in the final book. Storylines that were going to be in this book were moved to the 4th, and many more ideas were scrapped just to fit in. Maybe one day, a while after the final book is out, I’ll release a few bits of the notes.
As always, I create a lot of notes for these books, and this one had a ton. Pages and pages of random sentences were thrown about on a spreadsheet just trying to create some sort of plot and storyline.
But let’s move on, as it’s time I speak about the inspirations.
Just like Oscar Pat 1 and 2, this was inspired by a dream.
Unlike Oscar Pat 2, I can’t tell you the full dream as it will spoil some things yet to come. But, I can say that it was me exploring a gang in an abandoned train station and there was a guy with a strange ability there, that guy turned into Hunter, and the ability that he had in the dream, was the same ability he has. But, of course, I haven’t revealed that yet… I wonder what it’ll be?
But that’s not all! As there were two dreams that inspired this book. The first was of the train station, but the second was of the cinema mission.
Yet again, it was me as some kinda agent in a cinema, and I had to look after this new agent as he struggled and weighed me down in completing whatever it was I had to do. As soon as I woke I wrote about the dream and knew it’d be in an Oscar Pat book. When I wrote the idea down, I assumed it’d be Oscar in the cinema, but it ended up being Fi and Dean.
I don’t actually have much to talk about with this book. But, I believe it’s one of my best works. The difference between Oscar Pat 1 and 3 is massive, and it’s a shame Oscar Pat one is so ‘bad’ because I feel like it’ll put people off reading and getting to the later ones.
But anyway, enough about that.
I think that’s all I’ve got for this post. As I said in the last one, Oscar Pat 4 is slowly progressing with a hopeful release date of August 2021 (the month I’m writing this in), but there are no guarantees. The reason I want to get it done this month is that I’m super busy next month with my Graduation and also going on Holiday, so I’ve got a lot going on.
So, Thanks for reading!
