It may exist in real life, I do not know. It is not the concept of renting a girlfriend that bothers me, it is the characters. Here is an open letter, to the main character of the “hit” manga Rent-a-girlfriend.

Dear Kazuya,
Stop thinking.
I’m sick and tired of turning the page only to find the awful thought bubbles. All you think about is the girl you love but you never think of anything constructive. You just look at her as if she was an object.
For the last 200+ chapters, you have been staring at her, worried about how you act and how she thinks of you.
But, I can say, that if she knew what us readers knew, she would want no part with you. This whole world would abandon you and give up on you. You are beyond hope.
Your thoughts bring tears to my eyes as I wish that you would shut up.
Page after page, all you do is whine about your own failures, yet you never improve.
You end a chapter saying you’ll do better, but when will that come?
When will you learn and understand that you are the worst Main Character ever written?
You needed entirely new characters just to progress the story, no other character could save you, one even left the manga entirely and went to her own.
Why anyone would think you are a good main character is unbelievable.
Why anyone would think you are well-written is unbelievable.
The only person who may enjoy your childish and frustrating antics is yourself. Not even your pet fish enjoys you.
Sometimes I question my sanity, but more than that, I question the sanity of your author. How can he continue to write you that way?
Does feedback not exist in Japan? Does he not know the complaints from overseas fans.
I’ve heard you are very popular in Japan, but that is because of the well-drawn girls who are very beautiful, not the writing or anything else.
To end my letter, Kazuya, please stop thinking. No one wants to hear for the 1000+ time how you feel about the girl we all know you like.
No one enjoys you when you open your mouth, but also no one enjoys you when you don’t speak.
P.S. I don’t know what kind of issue you have, but just stop.
P.S.S Please stop making Kazuya think, it’s just terrible writing. If you want to try and develop your characters you could give the others some thought bubbles, but I understand you don’t know how to write. Or, better yet, stop doing thought bubbles altogether, you may start to develop your skills as a writer by relying on them less.
