The year ends. Now I have decided on my favourite things of the year. As always, the only rule is that I discovered it this year. It could have been released a few years ago, but since I first discovered it this year, it is allowed.
Let’s begin
Film:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse
Possibly, my favourite film ever made. I watched it in the cinema and fell in love. I couldn’t look away because I wanted to watch every little moment again and again. It’s a film I’d say impacted me more than I realise. I watched it with wonder. I watched it with jealousy, as I was upset that I couldn’t create such a masterpiece.
It has a loveable and alive cast that had me almost out of my seat at some of the moments.
The soundtrack floored me. Once those credits rolled and I heard that song I was transported to another dimension. Another spider-verse, if you will. I cannot explain the emotions I felt watching this film well enough through text.
Don’t even get me started on animation.
To me, it was flawless. I loved every second of it and have already watched it multiple times.
Easy film of the year.
Possibly the best film ever.
Song:
Picking a song is hard. My music taste changes so often that I cannot pick one, but this year I found it somewhat easy.
Wasted Summers – Juju
This is a great song. Check it out if you haven’t. It blew up on TikTok and YouTube and all that but I listened to it before it was cool.
Normally, my Spotify Wrapped tells me what my most listened-to song is, but that doesn’t make it my favourite.
Anime:
I didn’t watch much anime this year, very little in fact. Barely even 10 unique shows.
One Piece would be number 1 if I had started watching this year and not like 15 years ago. One piece dominated this year. They had some of the best episodes to ever air and it showed no signs of slowing down.
But, since I have to pick something I discovered/watched first time this year, I’ll pick One Piece: Film Red.
I think it is my second favourite One Piece film. I enjoyed the story and the cool fights. It was a lot of fun to watch. The songs were great as well.
Is this cheating because this is an anime film? Yes and no. It’s my list, so my rules.
Manga:
If the rule was that I had to have started and finished it this year then I would have an easy answer, mainly because I have very few options, but if I include those still publishing, I am now struggling.
This year I started reading a lot of good manga.
JoJo part 9, Beat & Motion, Berserk, Oshi No Ko.
Honestly, I’d give it to Berserk. If you’ve read it, you’ll know why. I’m writing this shaking my head because I can’t believe I ever thought something could rival this. I’d give it a 10/10 right now. Go read it.
But, I’m also going to give an award to a manga that I started reading and finished in 2023, and that manga is Blue Hearts.
Blue Hearts is written by the same person who wrote ReLIFE. I love ReLIFE. The author just knows how to tell those deep and powerful stories about mental health. The characters are always so loveable and charming that you want to be best friends with them.
Plus the art is fantastic.
Game:
No matter what came out this year, I was always going to pick this. For a lot of people, this is a hard choice, but not for me.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
I haven’t even finished it. I’ve been slowly playing through it on my channel and love every moment. I can’t wait to keep playing. The building is so fun, the world is so alive, and the characters are fantastic. This is a Zelda game everyone should play.
Tv show:
This is tricky as I don’t watch a lot of TV. So, here are some shoutouts:
Loki season 2
and
Gen V
They are the only two shows I remember leaving a positive impression on me.
A lot just made me feel “meh” inside.
But the winner is the final season of a fantastic Netflix show:
Sex Education Season 4
A lot of people had complaints about it, but it wrapped things up nicely for me. I’ve always loved how Sex Education deals with certain moments. I’ve loved watching these characters change and develop for the last 4 seasons, and holy hell do they develop. These are some of the best-written characters I’ve ever seen. They are fantastic. I want to rewatch the whole thing just to experience their growth again.
A great goodbye, one that left me with a smile.
Blog post:
Compared to previous years, I haven’t written much.
But, my favourite is probably “No Matter what I’m just going to hate myself”
I don’t have much to say about it, just go read it.
That’s it for 2023. It had some great things to offer, but very few battles for me. I didn’t have as hard a time as I have had in the past.
Let’s see what 2024 has.
