It’s been a while since I did one of these posts. This time I’m going to be talking about my book The Hunting Trio. As always, there will be SPOILERS. Please go read it first before checking out this post.
Let’s begin.
To start, it’s a bit different to usual. I consider it part of my “Who cares” book selection. This is a selection of books I wrote that I didn’t care too much about it. I wrote it all with little notes and plans and mostly just went with whatever came to my head. It’s why some parts are weird and may not make much sense to you.
With this book, I also wanted to try to write a “horror”. If you’ve read the book you’ll know it is not a horror in any way. I was interested in writing horror for a while but just didn’t understand it. I probably should read some more horrors.
As always, I like to talk about inspiration and as always, The Hunting Trio came from a dream.
The dream was the very first scene, with the giant octopus. It plays out almost exactly as it did in the dream, with me and some people trying to hunt it. Although the dream did have some differences. The dream took place during the day and I hid inside an indoor swimming pool, only to find that some people hadn’t evacuated. I decided to leave out the “public” aspect of it and keep these monsters a secret. I didn’t want to deal too much with writing boring politics as the world reacted to these monsters.
Speaking of monsters, several didn’t make the cut.
There were two cut monsters. One was a strange man covered in bandages (I guess a Mummy) and the other was a group of sharks that ate each other and grew in size.
I couldn’t fit them in anywhere so I decided to leave them out.
The monsters I went with were a bit strange. So, let’s talk about the house.
The house was a monster that I have no explanation for. I just wanted to drag out the story, but kinda trapped the characters in a difficult situation. It feels like a “deus ex machina” where the characters escape and that’s because it was.
To quickly touch on the character. The main character, Miller Clark, was inspired by me. After checking out parts of Steven King’s IT I was always so confused as to why you wouldn’t just put on an act. The clown is scared of confidence and it’s easy to trick yourself into being confident. I liked Miller’s false confidence and chatterbox style, which I would probably do given the situation.
Finally, I want to talk about the end and another one of my books.
First, the end did change several times. Originally, Miller wasn’t going to die, no one was. Miller was going to become the vampire, but as Scott’s character developed it made sense for his selfish act at the end. I also had plans where Miller would become the vampire and be killed by Logan.
The vampire is probably the biggest contradiction in the whole book. There is no point for the vampire at all. But there was once a point. The Hunting Trio ties into One’s Confined Life. It was meant to be a prequel set many many years ago in a different civilization. The vampire from One’s Confined Life was meant to be Miller’s next chosen person, a girl he fell in love with.
The link between the two is still there, but it’s not as big as I wanted it to be. I still see the two as related.
That’s all for me. I want to do another one of these soon, I’ve still got a book or two to talk about.
Thanks for reading, be sure to follow, comment and share as it helps me out.
