Welcome to the end-of-year “Slippyfop Awards” where I talk about my favourite things I enjoyed from the year 2022. From TV to Manga. Music to my own blog posts. Let’s discuss it here.
As always, the only rule is that I must have seen it for the first time this year. It could have come out in 1998 but as long as I saw/heard it for the first time this year, it counts.
Before we start, this is all my opinion. You may disagree and that is ok.
Favourite Song:
Deciding on my favourite song is always hard. I discover so much new music each year that I always hate to pick a favourite.
However, I did find one. But before that, let’s talk about some honourable mentions:
Honourable Mentions:
Birdland (Weather Report), We’ll Live and Die in These Towns (The Enemy), Narrow (Kusunoki Tomori), On Melancholy Hill (Gorillaz), and many more…
Maybe I’ll start to create a playlist for this stuff…
Anyway, there can only be one winner and this winner is a song that I first heard whilst being driven to the hospital back when I had an asthma attack in May. No matter how many times I listen to this song I can’t get enough of it. The song is…
Whole of the Moon (The Waterboys).
A straight 10/10 banger. A true vibe that I can’t see myself ever getting tired of.
Favourite Game:
The favourite game category is also a struggle. I don’t play as many games as I used to, and certainly not new ones. Most of the time I’m replaying older games that I’ve already beaten, but I do have one winner.
Marvel Snap
This game has killed Hearthstone for me. It’s so fun, beautiful and clearly made with love. The quick matches make it perfect to kill time and get stuck in the grind. Plus, it’s just so unique. It’s a card game like no other. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Favourite Anime:
Just like with video games, I don’t watch as much Anime as I used to. This year was at an all-time low, with the only thing I really wanted to watch (One Piece Film Red) not being available to me until probably next year.
But there is a winner and an honourable mention.
Honourable Mentions:
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean Part 2, Overlord IV.
Now, before we talk about the winner, I am writing this on November 28th. The final part of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean releases on December 1st. This could easily be the anime of the year for me. However, my heart will not change even if it is a 10/10.
My favourite anime this year was:
Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta)
Never before have I loved an art direction so much. I wanted to live in this peaceful 3 AM wonderland. The colours, music, and sound effects. It all perfectly comes together to create this strange but mesmerising world. It feels so dreamlike yet realistic. So calm yet magical.
(Also, this anime has my favourite opening of the year, but Overlord IV was close)
Favourite Film:
I could probably count all the films I saw this year on one hand. I have no clue. Coming up with this list was such a struggle. Unlike anime, I don’t keep track of TV shows or films, but I probably should.
However, there was one film that I saw and wanted to see for a while.
But, we have one honourable mention and that is the only other film I know I saw this year.
Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.
Anyway, the winner is:
8 Mile.
I had never watched this until this year. I knew I was missing out and I’m glad I was able to catch up to it. It was as good as I had heard. I loved how loud it was while being so quiet at the same time. It’s a shame we don’t see many films like it anymore.
Favourite Manga:
I do keep track of all my manga. So, let’s just jump into the Honourable Mentions
Honourable Mentions:
Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta), Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, Knights of the Apocalypse, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man.
But for me, it was Spy X Family.
It’s so fun and cute, yet so serious at the same time. However, I would say that my biggest issue with it is that it isn’t serious enough. It could easily be far more serious and does have those moments. But I love everything about it. The characters are especially the strongest part.
(I had trouble picking this as I also believe Chainsaw Man was my favourite, but as of this post, I’ve reread Spy X Family multiple times where I’ve only read Chainsaw Man once)
Favourite TV Show:
Yeah, I don’t watch TV. All I can remember watching is the worst season of Doctor Who yet and a few Disney shows.
I suppose as an honourable mention I would give it to the Umbrella Academy Season 3, or maybe even Wednesday (At the time of writing this I’ve only seen the first 2 episodes).
However, for me, Ms Marvel was my favourite.
I just had a lot of fun with it. I found it strangely fascinating. Something about it just sat right with me. I felt the same towards She-Hulk, but She-Hulk was very very bumpy in parts.
Favourite blog post:
I looked back on all my previous posts to try and decide what I would put as my favourite. I really wasn’t sure, but after some thought, I think I’d put Grave Digger.
Grave Digger is a short story I wrote randomly. Believe it or not, it was based on a dream. I can’t remember much about the dream, but writing the little story was fun, it was mostly just something to get me back into writing short stories again.
I think that’s all from me. I can’t think of any other categories but if you have one then post it in the comments and I’ll reply with my answer. Let me know your favourites of the year.
