If you didn’t know, I make video games. In fact, it’s what my university degree is in. I’m only 23 years of age, but I started making games when I was around 14/15. One of those games was Detox, or as it is now known D’tox.
Today, I wish to share and compare the original that was released years ago and the modern update that launched in July 2022.
To begin, let’s talk about what the game is. The game is a simple repetitive arcade-type game where you see how long you can last. You are attacked by waves of things to detox, and to do so you must click on them in order from highest to lowest. It’s a super simple game meant to be played a ton.
So, let’s first look at the original.
The main menu is a bit bad for the eyes. For starters, this version is in the landscape as I didn’t know how I would make it in portrait mode. As you can see from the image below, I kept up the terrible background colours.
In the game rules, you can see an extra rule I didn’t mention. If you click on something out of order it adds another. This made the game super hard, and it’s understandable why I didn’t include it in the remake.
As for the game itself, this is what it used to look like. You can see your score in the top left with the waves in the bottom right. Your health is at the top next to a pause button with a strange bar at the bottom. This strange bar was added later and is a special move. By filling up that bar you can unleash powerful magic that wipes away all on screen.
When I was making this game, I believed that it wasn’t fun. I thought that it needed something else to give it that push, so I added an extra mode.
That extra mode had nothing to do with the main game, in fact, it was a completely separate game. It was pinball.
You had 100 seconds to score as many points as you could, any time you hit an object, you’d gain a few points. As you can see, this mode wasn’t perfect. Some stuff spawned inside each other and the ball would get stuck on objects every now and then.
However, it was a fun little project more than anything. Whilst I knew it could be improved, my young 15-year-old self was happy with it.
So, let’s see the difference between this version and the current.

For starters, things look a lot cleaner. The background is much cooler (and even moves), with the game being made look easier to navigate and simpler.
Even the main game looks much better.
The basic rules are the same, click the largest but it was given a great amount of polish. The portrait mode makes it easier to see what is going on, whilst the clearer numbers help players last longer. I added a much-improved tutorial to help players understand the game better.
I removed the special ability (because I forgot it was in the old one until making this) and the extra mode. It is just this one game mode where you try and survive for as long as you can. Nothing else.
Although, there is one extra thing, and that is a boss may appear every now and then, but you’ll need to download the game to see that…
This game was a simple one, and I remade it in only 1 or 2 weeks. Because it was so simple, I don’t have much else to say. So for now I’m going to leave it here.

Be sure to share, like and all that. I’ll try and do more of these every now and then so be sure to follow as well.
