The second special of the year, Doctor Who Legend of the Sea Devils, just finished airing and just like always, I’ll be going over my thoughts and opinions.
Before I start, I’d like to say I have no nostalgic attachment to the Sea Devils, I’ve probably only seen 3 episodes of Classic Who and the Sea Devils weren’t one of them. However, I will say that the decision to include the Sea Devils feels as though Chris Chibnall has no confidence in his own stories or monster creation (I don’t blame him after the Pting). To me, it feels like a cheap trick of using fan favourites for views, something we saw him do in Flux.
Anyway, let’s begin. I’ll be going over my thoughts in order with the episode.
As always these are just random thoughts that annoyed me or things I enjoyed.
Grabbing a sword between two fingers feels like a bad idea that will easily backfire.
Strange camera cuts during the sword fights make it impossible to see what’s happening.
Good thing Yaz and Dan were ready with that net to capture the sea devil. I wonder when they planned to do that?
The Sea Devils look cool.
We don’t need to hear emotional deep conversations between Dan and every side character
The pirate queen has a very blunt sword to place it against Dan’s neck like that.
The underwater scene was pretty until the doctor ruined it by talking.
Their faces planting against the floor got really old really fast.
The doctor keeps talking on and on about how the aliens survive and how their spaceship works but it doesn’t really matter. She doesn’t need to say every little detail to explain every little thing. Put that time in actual important things like how they escaped that ship. Speaking of escaping the ship…
They somehow escaped the ship????? With the guy???
The sword fights have too many cuts. It’s so hard to watch. I can’t tell what is going on. Either there were directing issues, editing issues or choreography issues but either way something needs to change.
This feels like a Disney channel movie fight scene.
“You didn’t have to kill him” then she gives Dan a sword for ’emergencies’. Dan kills proceeds to kill the sea devils.
If Yaz is the best she’s ever met then that’s such an insult to everyone that came before. No way does the Doctor actually believe those words.
Overall, it wasn’t anything special. It was very forgetful and kinda meh. It wasn’t so bad that I’d remember it for the wrong reasons but it wasn’t good that I’d want to remember it. The forced ship between the Doctor and Yaz is still unneeded and in no way interesting.
The number of cuts during the sword fights caused dizziness more than anything. This episode came across as a school’s attempt at Pirates of the Caribbean. The only saving grace was decent CGI and the Sea Devils looking insanely good and I love their eyes.
I’m looking forward to 1 final episode of Chibnall, but I also can’t wait to see a good episode.
From what I can see of the next episode, it is once again Chibnall knowing his writing is weak and using nostalgia to help bump it up.
That’s all from me, thanks for reading and as always my links are below.
