3 AM Music – Passive loneliness

I find that the introduction of “lo-fi hip hop beats to chill and relax to” has helped in many ways, more than people realise. 

I feel like most people reading this would know what I’m talking about, but if not then I suggest going on YouTube and searching it up. But for a quick explanation. On YouTube, there are types of videos often with the words “…to relax to” or “…to study to” in the title. These are hour-long videos or live streams that consist of various pieces of music. I won’t be talking about the music but instead the art that accompanies these videos.

The main intention of these videos is relaxation. They follow the idea of “3 AM music” which is basically music you’ll listen to in the dead of night. They may have some nice relaxing raindrops or some kind of lonely ambience.

This brings me to the main topic, loneliness.

These videos often invoke passive loneliness in people. They are meant to allow you to relax your shoulders as you look back on life and reflect on your day. They want you to exhale a large sigh as you feel your individual breath. But more than that, they want you to feel safe.

The videos often have a feeling of cosiness. A safe relaxing place you want to retire in. A world that protects you from real life.

It creates an isolated feeling of what was in the past. Your mind will be filled with impressions of how your life was before it was bombarded by the stress from the real world. There is a slight nostalgia that comes from what could have been. We’ve all had thoughts of living a peaceful life like that. However, these videos also create the opposite, they bring together people with the same mind. People who are studying late at night, like-minded people who are reminded that they aren’t alone.

Is there anything wrong with this? Of course not. The idea of the video is to relax and reduce stress. Does it do that? I’d say yes. To me, it swarms me with the feelings of loneliness that I mentioned above. It reduces my stress and calms me but can’t stop me from thinking of what could have been. As I just said, that’s not a bad thing, because it turns it into a relaxing loneliness. Maybe even a content loneliness.
