“Where is he now?” John asked as he spoke to Scott through a secure phone line.
“He’s at my place,” Scott replied, peering over to Kyle who hadn’t lifted his face from the bed he collapsed on. “I don’t think there is anything else we can do.”
“I suppose I’ll have to come and talk to him.”
“No, it’s fine,” Scott suggested. “I think he’s done.”
“Done? What do you mean?”
“It’s just like before. This reunion is over.”
“…I understand,” John said, “What do I do about the bounty?”
“I’ll do what I can to hack into their system and try to remove it. Hopefully, after a month you’ll be able to go outside again.”
“Thanks… It was fun while it lasted, but if Kyle ever changes his mind, he knows where to find me.”
“Thanks, John.”
“No worries, Stay safe, Scott.”
Their phone call ended as Scott placed the phone down by his side. His eyes floated over to Kyle who had been listening the entire time, pretending to be asleep. Since returning all he did was try to sleep, but the nightmares kept him up. It was always of her dead body, ringing as heavy bags dug under his eyes.
2 days had passed since April’s death.
Kyle hadn’t eaten or drank anything. He hadn’t seen sunlight or moonlight. No sound entered his ears and no light entered his eyes.
All he had was regret in his mind.
Although April dragged him back, it was him that accepted it. Once he found out about Tom, he insisted on returning. Perhaps if he never returned, April would still be alive. The two would be separated but they would be alive.
Another 3 days would pass, and Kyle would first take a step outside of the room Scott prepared for him.
“Kyle!” Scott said as he was met with surprise at seeing the dead, emotionless eyes of Kyle who gazed over to his purple-bladed knife that rested in its case atop a small side table. “Are you ok?”
“Sorry… It’s my fault.” His voice was one flat note, quiet and almost mute.
“No…” Scott mumbled. “It’s my fault, I should have been more careful. If I protected her as you asked…”
“It’s ok, Scott.” Kyle said, “It’s fine…”
“Sorry. Would you like something to eat? You must be hungry.”
“…” Kyle’s eyes were still looking around at the unfamiliar territory around him. After being out for a few days, his mind was still trying to reboot.
“No,” Kyle said. “I’ll get something whilst I’m out.”
“Where are you going?” Scott asked.
“To the capital. I’m going to kill Tom.”
“What?” Scott rushed over to Kyle who was already in front of his knife. He slowly picked it up out the box as he stared at his dying reflection in the clear sharp blade. “That’s suicide.”
“It has to end.”
“It’ll only end with you dying.” Scott was staring at Kyle’s eyes, but all he could see was a corpse. There was no happiness or light in his eyes. He had experienced these feelings once before, a depression inside Kyle that caused him to lose his mind, something only April could heal.
“If I die, then I die…”
“I’m not going to let you run off and get yourself killed. I failed April but I’ll protect you.” Scott slammed his foot down as he tried to intimidate the lion that was in front of him, despite their age difference, Scott was the one that was cowering.
“What are you going to do? Are you going to join me in the capital and fight Tom?”
“I’ll…” Scott was hesitant. He knew how little he was worth. There wasn’t much he could do physically, but there was one department he could help with. “I’ll be in your ear. I’ll help you get in and out safely. I’m assuming you had no plan of entry.”
“…” Scott was spot on. Kyle had zero plan.
“Alright,” Kyle said as he stepped away, moving over to the door. “But I’m leaving now,” Kyle picked up one tiny little earphone resting on Scott’s floor. A white little bud that randomly stuck out amongst the mud. “I’ll use this. I’m leaving now, so if you’re slow, then it’s your fault.”
