Gang Wars Chapter 10: The Reunion

Despite a bullet having escaped through her body, April wasn’t going to give up. To her, that bullet was only nothing more than a bee sting. It wasn’t that she had received any special training or lacked the nerves to feel the damage, but she knew that if she died, the pain Kyle would go through would be far worse.

“I’m not surprised you still want to fight,” Tom said as he kept the gun straight, holding it to April’s back as he was ready to fire again.

However, before the next shot was fired, April spun around on the spot, wielding tightly a tiny little sharp blade in her hand that sliced across Tom’s upper lip as it passed.

He flinched back as he started to drip blood onto the ground.

“You bastard.” He said as he knew his lip wasn’t going to stop any time soon. He pulled back out the gun, pointing it towards April before she could get another hit in, but she jumped on top of him. The two of them were pushed towards the hard ground as April sat atop him, bleeding from her chest into his. In her violent retaliation, the gun that Tom once possessed was dropped on the ground and kicked far away.

April sat atop him, holding the knife as she was ready to plunge it into her brother’s chest.

But as she looked down to her brother’s pained eyes and bruised face…

She hesitated.

A push to her chest was enough to get her off. The wound was already killing her. Tom did more damage than he realised.

April tumbled backwards as she screamed in pain, squeezing her eyes as she hoped to bear through it all.

However, once she opened them again, she only saw Tom’s back as he was rushing towards the kicked-away gun.

And this was enough.

A situation she was hoping for.

From the inside of her jumper, April pulled out her own pistol, pointing it at her brother as…

BANG!

One shot was enough to replicate the wound. The two siblings shared the pain.

“FUCK!” Tom screamed in pain as he felt the bullet halt in his back.

He crippled down to the ground, unable to get close to the gun, but he wasn’t going to give up.

Crawling along the ground, Tom was after the only chance he had left.

Persistently, April was also doing the same. She was trying to line up her next shot. With what little strength she had left in her pale body, she pushed herself up, and through blurring vision, pointed the gun back to Tom.

Tom didn’t even turn around to notice, that’s how desperate he was.

He was a finger-nail away. He just needed to stretch to reach the metal grip.

And then…

THUD!

It wasn’t the sound he was expecting. A dull thud crashed to the ground as it vibrated his heart. Tom turned around in surprise, uncertain as to what had happened. But he already knew.

As lying in a pool of her own blood April rested.

She had lost too much blood, her body could no longer function. But even if she could survive the bullet wound, the blunt hit she just received to her head finished her off.

“She’s dead…” Tom mumbled to himself as he continued to watch her body, slowly turning around as he crawled towards it. He looked to her body, lying beside him as he also felt his own end quickly arriving.

But before he called for any help, he was too trapped on April’s resting, sorrowful smile. The sister he had grown up with was dead.

But what was left?

He had spent most of his life on this goal, and now that it had happened, he didn’t know what to make of it. He just kept looking at her as the occasional memory entered his mind, but those never lasted.

Any attachments to his past were gone. He no longer had any family.

The closest thing left was Kyle, from when they were both in The Cassettes together.

“Jessica!” Tom screamed out as through the large open warehouse door, Jessica entered. “I need you to help me… Quickly, I’m dying.”

“What about her?” Jessica asked as she felt a sickness rise in her stomach from looking at April’s body.

“She’s gone. It’s too late for her. But I’ll live because you’ll save me.”

He was 3 hours too late.

But at 2:32 AM, Kyle arrived at the warehouse covered in dry blood of those that tried to kill him. He was unharmed physically, but mentally he was a wreck.

It was impossible not to notice the strange lump lying in the middle of the floor. In the darkness, it was difficult to see who it was, but he had hoped that it was Tom. Every cell in his body was praying that it was Tom.

Once he got closer, he collapsed to the ground.

Tears crashed down his face as he let out a pained wail. He couldn’t look away from her face as he wished he could do something, anything.

The dead cannot be brought back.

He gently placed his arms around her, moving her cold body against his. He hugged tightly the girl he once loved. The girl who changed him and the girl he regretted leaving behind.

His throat quickly dried out as he spent hours with April’s body, unable to say or do anything.

He just wished to spend one last moment with her.

And once the sun came up, shining light into the warehouse, he realised that he had to go.

He stood up with his red, swollen eyes and picked up April’s body, slowly taking it outside to give it the burial it deserved.
