6 weeks later, Doctor Who Flux has ended. It was a quick 6 weeks, but for some, it was too long.
To start this post I’ll be giving my brief thoughts of the final episode (as I watch it), and afterwards, I’ll give a little review for the whole series.
So, let’s begin.
“She thinks running will help?” Clearly, since you don’t even have the competence to touch her.
If the doors can lead to any time and any space, what are the chances one of them was ever going to be labelled anything close to 2021?
Kate Stewart appears because of convenience and suddenly everything is solved.
I hate this script.
“But seriously, how am I here?” We all want to know.
Did we really need to Sontaran broadcast thingy to tell us that they have taken over Earth?
I don’t have any comments for this crashing into the Sontaran ship scene. That’s not a compliment.
Shame the Sontarans didn’t have protection from their own ships crashing into them in episode 2.
As cool as the house looks, it just has no power to it. It was ‘shown’ in episode 1 and at this point lost any emotion it could hope to create.
And this guy can just burn the Doctor’s memories? Because we need the Doctor to feel troubled? Do we need to raise the stakes? At this point not seeing the Doctor’s memories just means nothing. The whole show is that we don’t know the Doctor’s name so why should we care about this strange sudden past?
The Doctor travelling to the various times and places would be cool if it made sense and not just a massive coincidence that it so happens to be in the places of everyone important to the story.
“Do you have any idea what she’s talking about?” I don’t think even the writers know.
I assume they have probably billions of Sontarans around the world, but it’s funny to think how many of them are in Liverpool.
To think the Flux was going to be solved by chocolate.
I can’t get over how much I dislike the dog costume. It’s too creepy.
“You don’t get to die yet, we’ll decide when.” WHAT? YOU’VE TRIED TO KILL HER TWICE ALREADY! THE START OF THIS EPISODE WAS YOU GOING TO KILL HER.
If all that she says about time and balance and whatnot is true, then why didn’t the flux happen sooner?
A loop of destruction must get boring real fast. All characters I’ve seen that held power like that ended up getting so bored of it.
Ah, so now they decide the Doctor will die… oh, never mind…
I guess that theory that he was howling in pain was true. (what a strange theory).
The weird transport ship with a budget mask is a thing that I definitely didn’t forget about.
Honestly, I like stories of main characters having a plan that fails.
I get that this girl is Dan’s “girlfriend” but this feels so out of character for her, even if she has been here for a while.
Wow, getting out was certainly easy. Seems like walking luggage has a big bug, hopefully, they get that fixed in the next patch.
Could the sonic screwdriver always do that?
I wonder if Chris Chibnall plays Overwatch.
When did the TARDIS get fixed?
Oh, so this was why they did that Sontaran alliance video.
I’m not going to get into this 2 Doctors thing because they are technically all the same but just in 3 places in time and space? It’s a bit confusing and I feel like there is some issue here with two Doctor’s being in the same place but whatever.
“It’s too much for her.” Says the man in zero pain.
I’ve already said a little bit on this three doctor thing, but it’s starting to grow on me. It’s clever and I’ll give it that.
Did they explain how Kate got to the tunnels? How did she know to go there? Was the TARDIS always there?
It’s ok tunnel man from Liverpool, you did something. Looking back on it, I don’t think there was much need for you, there were probably easier ways to regroup the group instead of a man who was teased since episode 1 only to have a little role.
Ah, the TARDIS can just get in, can it?
What an emotional reunion. Call me heartless but the world is ending.
I enjoy how Yaz went with the Doctor to meet Kate because it shows how much of a useless character she is. She had her ‘episode’ last week, and even that was awful. Shame the companions never got a good episode to themselves.
I knew the day would come when I’d need a PhD in physics to understand Doctor Who.
There’s about 20 minutes left in this episode and I’m not sure even it knows how it’ll end.
He stayed behind to shoot when the Sontarans clearly lack the reaction time to even see him before he took the gun.
The Daleks and Cybermen were in the teaser because Chris Chibnal knows his episode is terrible and he constantly uses nostalgia to trick people into thinking it’s good.
That betrayal happened quicker than I thought.
I feel bad for that one Ood.
Damn, these two ships are killing us, whatever are we going to do with are many much larger ships?
This is ending is very anti-climatic.
The professor (Whose name I can never remember), had his death and departure ruined by a weird soundtrack choice. It feels too bombastic for a sad death. But it feels like it wants to be sad?
The flux. A thing that can destroy anything, is ruined by a budget travel bag.
You’ve done it, you’ve really done it.
You created something so impossible to beat that the solution could only be as stupid as that.
Calling it now, the Doctor will give up on her memories because at this point it doesn’t matter.
And obviously, the villains die by another stupid means. Because they were too overpowered and beating them would require a clever and unique solution.
“Nothing is forever.” except you because you’re literally immortal. (We’ve already had a story about an immortal girl living to the end of the universe, except that was interesting).
Good thing the real big bad didn’t actually care about being freed and just let the Doctor go with a few cryptic words.
Is the Doctor going to let Vindor kill Grand Serpent? Is this really the same Doctor?
Thank God she didn’t kill him. She just left him to suffer for eternity in the middle of nowhere. Good thing he’s left with only his thoughts as he drifts around space till the end of time. What a nice person she is.
“I like this regeneration.” Literally, Chris Chibnall sucking himself off.
Still didn’t give Dan a job at the museum. Feels Bad Man.
This girl Dan likes certainly had a massive change of character back to herself. Is she bipolar?
Ah, so Dan will be travelling with the Doctor along with Yaz. We all knew it, but a fair few of us didn’t want it to happen.
Wait, why was she after the Dog in the first place? At the very start of episode 1, why did she go to the Dog if she wanted information? She had no idea they knew each other.
The Doctor and Yaz have this weird relationship. It doesn’t seem like love, but I feel like that’s what they want it to be.
The watch always gets cool music. I’m glad.
I knew it. I knew she’d get rid of the watch.
But I’ve got to ask again, why is the TARDIS fixed?
MORE DALEKS? I know his original villains were awful but come on?
Well, that’s Flux over. Let’s get on to the overall review.
First, it’s bumpy. Very Very Bumpy.
It’s filled with awful plot holes that exist because of how much Chris Chibnal wanted to do. I’ve said almost every week that 6 episodes was too much. Remove the angels, remove the division, keep the terrible ending of the flux if you have to, but just shorten it. You could even remove the entirety of episode 2. If you’re going to suddenly bring back other villains why not do that with the Sontarans in the final 2 or so episodes? Don’t have them in episode 2, then not till the final one. Remove the Grand Serpent and Unit (Literally only there cause of Vindor). And with the Grand Serpent gone you can remove the subplot with Vindor and Bel. Keep Dan’s “girlfriend” but improve on her a lot. Give her more time instead of these new people that don’t matter to the character that we’ll be with for the final 4 episodes.
The acting is average. The villains were great. They both were really good actors. The companions/others, not so much. But, I usually blame the acting on the script. It feels like the script lets them down a lot. This entire series has been shockingly unmemorable.
The ending of a Doctor is always exciting because they are always super cool and interesting.
The 4 knocks from the 10th Doctor and whatever the 12th had (I can’t remember), are always cool. The time for a writer to just flood us with sad emotions is at the departure of a character we’ve followed for so long.
Whatever happens in these final 4 special episodes, I hope Chris Chibnal gives us one hell of a regeneration scene, because to me, 10 and 12 cannot be beaten.
Anyway, overall, this show was a mess. It was bad. Pretty bad. There’s a lot I didn’t go into detail on, like the music. So if there is something you’d like to see me talk about please put it in the comments below.
Overall, from me, Flux deserves a 3.9/10. It’s not worthy of a 4, but it could be there. It’d probably be a 6 if they did all the story stuff I mentioned above.
