Gang Wars Chapter 7: The Bounty

Several days had passed since they entered The Capital. They had been training restlessly every day whilst trying to come up with a new plan of action. They possessed little information to work off. And since they could only move at night, it was almost impossible to gather any credible information. Originally, they were relying on old informants from back when they were called The Cassettes. But most of them were dead.

Their leads were gone.

And to make matters worse, on their 5th day in The Capital, a sudden news announcement caught their eyes.

“This is an emergency broadcast,” The report read as she sat inside a dark red modern-looking room. “Several individuals have been seen walking around the streets of The Capital. Ask anyone who sees these terrorists to report it immediately, and to not engage. I repeat, these individuals should not be interacted with…”

The news report went on, but what had sealed their mouths shut was the crystal clear images they showed. Images that showed Kyle, April, Scott and even John.

“How do they know we are here?” April said.

But the images they used were far too recent. It wasn’t that they were expecting them, but a slip-up on their part.

“I suppose The Capital is being watched more than we thought,” Kyle said.

“That’s impossible.” said Scott, “I was certain to check the location of every camera down every road and street. I always gave you paths that had zero cameras.”

“Then how do we explain this?” said April.

“We don’t!” John joined in as he calmly walked over, “Let them find us. I’m up for a fight!”

“Either way,” Kyle smiled at John’s optimism, “we need a new base of operations. It’s not safe to stay here.”

“I can probably find an old Reilly warehouse for us to stay in, but I suppose we’ll get caught there.”

“You’re right.” Kyle’s mind entered deep thought. He looked around to the group he had only just reunited with, the same group that looked to him as a beacon of hope and inspiration. He was their leader, and right now, they needed to know his plan.

“Alright,” Kyle said. “I hate to do this so soon after meeting up, but we need to split up.”

“What?” Scott said, “Why now? We’ll be picked off on our own.”

“Then stay with John,” Kyle suggested, “But if we split up, it’s better. We can look for a place to stay, or stay separated and work individually.”

“I still think that’s a bad idea, they’ll still find us and hunt us down.”

“We’ll be delaying our deaths,” said April. “They’ll come for us eventually. By running and splitting up, we are extending our already ticking lives.”

“I’m staying here!” John announced.

“Then I’ll stay with John,” said Scott.

“This is the first place they’ll look…” Kyle rushed around to the back rooms of the gym they currently occupied. “You can stay if you want, but I’m leaving.”

He quickly gathered a large bag and filled it with various random breakfast bars and water bottles. He pocketed a tiny little pistol that he kept hidden away in his baggy jumper, and besides that, was the purple-tinted blade that he always used.

“Which side of town are you going to?” April asked as she also packed her things.

“I’m heading east.”

“I’ll head west. There’s an old weapons factory there, I’ll gather supplies and be in touch.”

“What? That’s even worse than staying here.” Kyle said.

“We need supplies. We need strong weapons. We are fighting the police and the government.”

“I won’t let you go.”

“Why not? Are you worried I’ll get killed on my own? You can come with me.”

Her offer was tempting. The words that her brother said were ringing in Kyle’s mind. But he had his own plans, and going with April was going to hinder them.

“No,” Kyle stated again. “Scott, stay with April. If she goes near a Reilly warehouse then contact me. We’ve all got burner phones, right?”

“Of course.”

“Perfect,” Kyle approached his group, unable to avoid the disgusted look from April. He looked positively at them, slightly nodding his head as he said some final words before departing.

“We’ll meet again!” he said, “I know it was a short reunion. But we’ll definitely meet again.”

“Don’t go dying on me. HA HA HA.” John laughed as he slapped Kyle on the back.

“I’ll do all I can to help you,” Scott muttered.

And then came April’s turn.

She raised her head to look at him, unable to smile as she said.

“You’ve changed.”

“I’m begging you,” Kyle said, “Don’t go near any factory. Don’t go near anything to do with the Reilly foundation… Please…”

“I just don’t get why? Can’t you tell me?”

“…It’s about your brother, Tom.”

“Tom? What about him?”

“He’s returned. He seems to have something against me… and wants to hurt you.”

April listened seriously, aware of the threat her brother posed to them all.

But, as her body silently shook, she said.

“I understand. I’ll stay with Scott.”

“Thank you.”

Kyle was ready to leave. He had said all he wanted to say. There was nothing else.

The Cassettes were about to disband, again.

But before he left.

“Kyle,” April called out, “I love you.”

Kyle hesitated, only slightly nodding his head to her before stepping out the door.
