Probably 99% of people are embarrassed by events in their past.
I’m no different.
There are events that I regret and wished I handled better. I wish I was smarter and acted differently, but maybe things would be different if I had.
But embarrassment doesn’t just come from how we act, because people are also embarrassed by their past work.
An artist may dislike their very first art. Same with a writer, or a poet.
Everyone hates what they used to do but I think it’s a great show of how far you’ve changed.
Below I’ve got an example of my old writing. As far as I can remember, this was the very very first thing I wrote when I started writing back in 2019. This is only a bit of the opening paragraph, but you can see how bad it is.
‘At 9am, it’s really difficult to stay awake. I’m sure it didn’t help that I stayed up all night, but we only started last week so it’s not like exams are close. The first lesson is maths. The teacher Mr Whitaker doesn’t care, he just wants to rush home and catch up on all the reality TV shows he missed.’
You can probably see why it’s so bad. A lot of it just doesn’t make much sense. It’s all just there, without reason. It rushes through sentences with no worry for them at all. It’s embarrassing for me to look back on it, but it’s only embarrassing because I know I’ve changed. I know that I’ve improved since then and I can proudly say that.
To be able to look back on your progress is one that others will be jealous about. Not everyone can do it, but most wish they could. Just starting is more than most will do.
Embarrassment is a sign of progress.
Be proud of yourself and your work. Laugh at your past self and stand tall as you think of how different you’ve become. Maybe for the worst or the better.
I can say that I’ve changed for the better.
You can look back on my blog for more terrible writing if you wish, or maybe you’re more interested in something decent, in which case you can check out my books with the link below.
But just because you find it embarrassing, doesn’t mean others will. For some, your progress is inspirational.
Thanks for reading.
Let me know if you ever look back on your past and what you think of it. Maybe you learnt something very important from it?
