I’m a bit late with my review, but it’s better late than never.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s latest blockbuster, but that doesn’t mean it feels like all the other Marvel movies.
For our first introduction to Shang-Chi, we are thankfully greeted with a great introduction story that isn’t ruined by unnecessarily long backstory or build-up. That’s not to say there is none, because this film opens up with a backstory. But it isn’t a superhero origin story that we are used to seeing. We don’t see Uncle Ben die a million times in every film, because we don’t need to. And this is what Shang-Chi does better than most.
It excellently weaves in Shang-Chi’s past with how he is in the present. We already acknowledge him as a fighter in the earliest scenes and this slightly different feel is constant throughout.
Whereas Marvel films have grand bombastic final fights with towering music, this film gives us a fresh feel with its music. The obvious Chinese inspirations and instrumentation are clear, but there is a stubble tranquillity to it that you don’t see in other Marvel fights.
Speaking of fights, I believe this film has the coolest fights in any Marvel film, to date.
The martial art fights are so well done and coordinated that you can’t help but move your body along with them as you duck and dodge hits. The creativity of the scenes is a sight to behold.
The intense action takes your breath as you could only wish the entire movie was as cool as this.
But sadly every movie has some issues.
For Shang-Chi, you could say it moves too fast. The pacing can be an issue, as it feels like some parts are there to fill time, whilst others are there because they have to be. The film is over 2 hours long and honestly, apart from the fights and some memorable scenes, there isn’t much else to it. I feel like the director knew this, which was why the fights lasted so long. The fights easily overshadowed a lot of the dialogue that explained the extremely simple story.
But, overall, that’s not to say it’s a bad film. It’s actually really good and felt rather fresh.
It’s a great time killer and has some of the best fights I’ve seen in ages.
Overall, Shang-Chi has great potential. The future of Marvel is still as bright as ever. New and Exciting characters like Shang-Chi are exactly what is needed.
8/10.
