Luck. Fate. Destiny.

Let’s say, that everyone has an amount of luck.

We’ll say the max is 100 and 0 is the minimum.

This value will drop at every action. Depending on the size or ‘luck’ of the action depends on how much is taken away.

For example, finding some small change on the floor is worth, 1. Whereas getting a good poker hand could be around 20.

As you use your luck, this number will slowly rise back up. Each person is different. Some have their luck increment in whole numbers, such as 1 or 2, but others may have theirs go up in 0.00001.

And perhaps the value of each action also varies from person to person. For some, maybe my above example of finding small change on the floor is actually worth 50, for others maybe it’s 0.1.

So what am I trying to say?

Well, I suppose you can take what you want from it, but when you think about every action, every little detail of every single moment, you start to see how much ‘luck’ affects things.

I’ve spoken on similar topics before, but one thing I’ve discussed with a few friends is the idea of ‘fate’ or ‘destiny’. Perhaps everyone has a goal in mind, but not everyone will meet it. Perhaps some giant creature above sets our destiny, and there is no such thing as free will.

Discussing the topic of ‘fate’ is one of my favourite things because there is no answer. The topic of ‘what if…’ and ‘what is…’ about life is so infinite that everyone has their own unique take on it.

The idea that life can get better, by believing your ‘fate’ will come and you’ll get what you want. Or the idea that you have free control, so the state of your life is nothing but your own actions.

For me, I believe in fate, but only because of the reason I’ve mentioned.

The idea that something could happen; or more correctly, the idea that something should happen.

I’ve said that I believe life to be ‘boring’. And perhaps others feel the same. But then, what makes life exciting?

I think that’s a topic for another day.

As I want to try and stay on track for once.

My above example of luck, numbering from 0 to 100, is something that is often joked about. When something lucky happens, people say ‘I’ve used up all my luck’. Or if something unlucky happens they still say the same.

I say it.

Sometimes when you play a game and you get a lucky win or a lucky dodge.

But what would you say is the luckiest thing possible?

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338

The odds of getting hit by lightning are 1 in 300,000.

The odds of getting in a plane crash are about 1 in 11 million.

Those are some massive numbers, especially when you think of scale. (Plus, it’s also great to see how safe planes are)

But what about you?

You are that little 1.

That 1 in whatever…

Perhaps the thing you’ve always wanted to happen was 1 in 1 million.

When you break it down, you can get a stupid rough estimate.

To give an example. Let’s say the odds of meeting your perfect partner.

If we limit ourselves to one country (the UK), then you’ve got 1 in 66 million. Obviously, all these people aren’t your age or possibly your preferred sex. So we’ll be generous and quarter that number.

So now we’ve got a 1 in 16 million.

Which is a little better.

But, now you have to meet them.

I’m going to throw a random number, and say that the odds of you meeting ‘the one’, being in the exact right place at the right time, are about 1 in a few billion (possibly even trillion).

So what am I getting at? Why am I saying all this?

Well, I don’t know. This is something I’ve always thought about and I think it’s an interesting idea for the butterfly effect.

All I know is that life is a gamble. You are betting yourself against an invisible opponent who doesn’t play fair. It’s up to you how much you bet, but you should also stop and think. Because this opponent can be beat.

I’ve spoken about the butterfly effect before, on a different post.

And I’ve spoken about similar statistics, like the ones mentioned above, in another post.

So I suppose this is my conclusion to this little series I didn’t know I was writing.

Luck is something not everyone believes in, and some use it to cope.

Personally, I believe in luck, as if I didn’t then I’d have to blame myself.

But is there anything wrong with that?
I suppose it depends on the scale.

But so long as you keep trying, and keep fighting against ‘luck’ and ‘fate’ then you’ll be fine.

Unless you don’t want to.

Perhaps the end goal is set, but not the journey.

Who can say?

I’m going to end here, as I feel like I’m rambling.
