It’s been a while since I released my ‘Writing my Novel: Oscar Pat The Golden Plate’ and I didn’t realise that I hadn’t written about the second book. So, as usual, in this post, I’ll be going over some fun facts, general thoughts on the book and more.
As always, there will be spoilers for both Oscar Pat 1 and Oscar Pat 2. If you wish to read them before checking out this post, then you can find them here.
Alright, so let’s begin.
From now on, I’ll be referring to Oscar Pat: The Hospital of Creation as Oscar Pat 2.
Let’s start with the obvious, there was a bit of a gap between the release of Oscar Pat 1 and Oscar Pat 2, the reason being I wrote A Hobbyist’s Chance in between, but I also think that this influenced Oscar Pat 2 greatly. I learnt a lot in A Hobbyist’s Chance about writing characters, dialogue and setting. And there is certainly a quality difference between Oscar Pat 1 and 2. In fact, I think there is a huge quality difference between all my books, especially the early ones.
Oscar Pat 2 was also a huge shift in tone. It’s where we start to learn more about the world and the horrors of it. We get glimpses of this in Oscar Pat 1 with Brandon but in the second one, we truly start to see some villains. This dark tone shift was the way it was always going to go, and it certainly holds strong throughout.
Additionally, we also learn more about GPS and other groups that were mentioned in Oscar Pat 1. Along with this, we are introduced to a few new characters, primarily, Dean Cooper. Dean is an interesting character and I won’t really be understood unless you read them all. But I see him as an attention seeker who doesn’t really know a lot. He thinks he’s better than everyone despite being so young, and because of this, his insults are terrible. But I think this was the perfect dynamic for Fi, someone who was never going to be fazed by his words. Fi was the perfect person to get Dean annoyed.
Now, for the original inspiration, as with most of my books, the original idea for Oscar Pat 2 came from a dream. Yup, just like Oscar Pat 1, this one was also a dream.
Instead of explaining it, here is what I wrote as soon as I woke up:
(MC means main character)
Squeal to the hotel, a mental hospital and have reports of missing people, MC goes to check and find a room filled with dead bodies which causes him to scream and close the door, when he next opens the door nothing is there. MC is sure it’s the doctor but doesn’t know how, he sneaks into another part of the building and meets a bunch of mentally ill kids, he asks them and they tell him about a safe which they open for him, inside is a bit of money and models of people and cars, the doctor finds MC and tries to kill him but MC kills him whilst defending himself which turns all the models back into people, he goes to see the mental kids that helped him and finds a bunch of toy cars in their place
As soon as I woke up, I wrote it down and knew immediately that it would be the sequel to Oscar Pat 1 (but I didn’t know it was going to be Oscar Pat back then). It’s amazing to see how the idea developed, but the idea of people being toys and vice versa was always going to be in.
There are a few side plots in this story, primarily involving Alex and Fi. Fi struggles with an illness and Alex struggle with fears of losing her friends. I can’t really say much about Alex’s stuff as that is easily explained in the story, but Fi being ill was something that randomly I put there. I remember writing Alex’s early lines about her wanting to avoid the illness during the award ceremony that was going around and I thought that it would be cool if Fi caught it. From there, it all kinda sorts itself out and I turned it into something that pushes her. She had a bit of a shy role in the first book, and she was always going to be a main character, so I wanted to give her some stuff.
Alright, let’s do some quick-fire stuff.
Oscar Pat 2 was the reason the covers for the books changed. Originally, the first book had a different cover but I wanted to have them be similar to Oscar Pat 1’s cover got changed to match.
Oscar’s power malfunctioning was something that I kinda regret writing, as all the stuff involving malfunctioning powers does seem rather weird to me. You probably notice when reading that those parts seem slightly ‘off’.
I think that’s all I’ve got, sadly.
Overall, I do like the second book. I’d say it’s better than the first, but personally, at the time of writing this, my favourite book is the third. Hopefully, I’ll get around to writing a post about the third one soon, but no promises. If you want news on Oscar Pat 4, then you’ll find it here! It’s in the works! I’ve written the first 6 or so chapters and hope to get it out before the end of August (no promises).
