Welcome to the next instalment in my “Talking about…” Series, where I talk about the stuff I’ve done over the recent years (and maybe some later years).
Here I’ll be talking about my short stories one by one. Explaining what could have been, what was going to be and other general stuff relating to them.
However, for the sake of more content, I will be splitting this post into two parts with the second lot coming out next week. I’ll go over all of them, but the three I’ll be going over in this part are:
So let’s begin!
Exam preparation:
Exam Preparation was the first short story ever put on this blog, but it wasn’t the first one I wrote (I’ll get to that later)
The initial inspiration for this has been forgotten. I can’t remember it. I remember wanting to tell the story of two opposites when it comes to exams. The overconfident, and the overly anxious. The story follows two people and their thoughts during the exam. According to my 2019 self (when I published this), it was because I wanted to show that everyone deals with exams different, however, I feel as though I did it to show that regardless of how difficult and how much you struggle with exams, you just gotta do it. The mark you get doesn’t matter, or something like that.
Personally, reading it back, I’m not sure I believe my own writing.
Train Journey:
I started my writing journey back in September/October 2018. This was the first thing I had ever written. Of course, I did some form of writing for school, but this was the first short story that I wrote for just me.
This is another thing where the original inspiration is lost to me, but, the one thing I know is that I really enjoyed writing it. I have this weird fascination with trains and the scenery you see along the way. Some of my favourite video game moments take place on trains, and the setting of a train just seems so cool to me, which was why I did it. (I blame Paper Mario: The Thousand-year door Chapter 6 for my love of trains as a theme).
Anyway, the story was about someone who took the same train every day but had his life changed when he met someone, or so I claim when I released the post. I can’t tell you if that’s true, I think this is one that has a lot of interpretations and meanings, it’s what you make of it, like a train journey.
Death Day:
Death Day was a built around the concept of “what if someone told you that you were going to die and you believed them.” but, as I wrote it, it quickly turned away from it and turned into a mystery. I left the ending as open as possible so people can make up their own theories about it all. I do, however, have the actual ending, but personally prefer whatever theories other people wish to come up with. It’s one of those things where it’s better left a mystery.
Also, originally, Death Day was three parts. You may know this as I mentioned it before when I released an early draft of part 2 under the title “Death Day, the lost chapter.”
What you don’t know, is that I still remember some parts of Death Day Part 3. From what I remember. The character was to randomly hear church bells and find himself staring at a church that just appeared in front of him (this is how the lost chapter ends). He was to be confused about it but go in to find the mysterious man, that foretold his death, sitting there, listening to the organ that filled the church’s walls.
I gave up on this idea as I had no idea how to carry it on without going on for longer than 3 parts. I knew I wanted it to be super short and didn’t even want three parts, so I tried to stick it to two.
Alright, so that’s the first three short stories down, only a few left. I’ll probably talk about them next week so if you are interested, make sure to follow.
As I said, there is a “cannon truth” to Death Day, but I think I’ll leave it alone and just let people think what they want to think.
