Writing my novel ‘Is it snowing yet?’

Welcome to ‘My Thoughts on…’ or ‘Writing my…’ or whatever. The series where I talk about thing’s I’ve written. I talk about the inspirations and other things that I find interesting. If the post is short, it means my initial inspiration was boring and trash.

Today, I’ll be talking about a novella I released earlier in the year.

Is it snowing yet? That’s the question and the title to my first self publish novella.

I will be going into spoilers, so if you haven’t read it yet (I don’t blame you if you haven’t) you can find it here:

To quickly summarize the plot, it’s about a depressed suicidal Sixth Form student who wishes he could find meaning in his life. Very generic-sounding stuff, and that’s cause it kinda is.

Anyway, from now on, spoilers. You’ve been warned.

What can I say about ‘is it snowing yet?’? Well, let’s start simple, with inspirations.

It’s not exactly based on a true story but is more based on a constant thought that was in my head.

It’s no secret that I struggle with depression. I was in counselling during Sixth Form and blah blah blah, all stuff I’ve said before in previous posts.

The main character, James, has a fantasy relating to his death, one that is he will die protecting someone as it was a way for him to leave the world with the least pain that would be inflicted towards others, this is also a personal view.

The fantasy James has is an exact copy of what I came up with for myself (I don’t think about it regularly, haven’t in ages, so don’t worry).

There are a lot of similarities between James and myself. James goes into school counselling during Sixth Form, he tries to do various things in hopes to find meaning in his life, and he even goes to outside ‘proper’ counselling (I don’t know what to call it so I just put ‘proper’ there). These things are true about me, although the timing for the ‘finding meaning in life’ is different. (some would argue I still haven’t found the meaning)

I started this blog in my second year of university, James starts his in Year 12.

But regardless of timing, the fact is that it is surprisingly somewhat autobiographical. It’s just my experiences and thoughts from various times of my life thrown into one time period.
Of course, I never did have all the ‘drama’ that happens. I never knew anyone that was schizophrenic and I never knew a girl that was in the library all the time. I certainly didn’t have a friend die for me. My Sixth Form life was very boring, filled with a lot of drama regarding relationships but nothing that people would kill you over (I hope).

Speaking of the character, Dan (the schizophrenic one). There was a time in my life where I was worried about being schizophrenic, I still have concerns about it but it doesn’t bother me anymore.

Sophia, the school counsellor, was based on my real school counsellor. They have different names but they are both super caring and will do whatever it takes to help. Although, my school counsellor was much better than Sophia. Sophia was kinda a dick at times.

Libby isn’t based on any person, but based around the typical fantasy everyone has of meeting their dream partner at school and growing old with them.

Gwen isn’t based on anyone at all, she’s just someone I wrote to make the story interesting.

Jack is also not based on anyone or anything in particular, I just needed a close friend for the main character.

In any of my stories that take place on earth in modern time, you’ll be able to find connections between me and the main character. These stories are based off my own selfish desires that I would never be able to normally achieve. I have another novel in the works that is also based off a dumb and stupid fantasy I created to make myself happy whenever I sleep.

It may sound sad and depressing, and that’s cause it is, but who cares.

I’ll keep writing (I hope) and keep doing whatever the hell I want, live life how you want, live for yourself, or some dumb motivational shiz that people always put.

One last thing that could be said, this was the novel that I first told my family about. I never told them about my writing or this blog and don’t tell them much in general. It seems strange but I suppose that’s just the type of family we are. Anyway, even if they know about the few novels I’ve got online I’m pretty sure they don’t know about this blog or my web novels. I’m pretty secret about my life to those around me, not a lot of people know.

Thanks for reading, next time on this series I’ll be talking about some of the short stories that I’ve written. It’s been a while since I last read over these short stories, so It’ll be embarrassing to read over them again.

I don’t know when that post will be out as the next post may be about something different but the constant theme with this blog was always inconsistency.
