The final chapter of the Manga, Domestic Girlfriend, just dropped and I read it and have a few opinions on the series as a whole. There will be spoilers but I’ll give a brief explanation of the plot.
Basically, a guy loves his teacher, sleeps with a different girl, and his dad ends up remarrying. This new marriage brings two stepsisters. One is the teacher he has a crush on, the other is the girl he slept with. Sounds strange? That’s because it is. And while it may be over 200 chapters, it is 200+ chapters of garbage. (I just checked, it’s almost 300 chapters)
From here on, there will be spoilers.
Domestic Girlfriend starts off strong, it tackles some really deep issues and does it surprisingly well (for the most part). But out of its 276 chapters, they can’t all be good. And that’s because they aren’t all good. There is a lot of strange filler that is decent enough to be its own major plot point but is quickly scrubbed off and the characters are forgotten about. My favorite story which never had any impact, was about a girl who did drugs and got involved in some gang stuff (can’t remember the girl’s name). A lot of people didn’t like that but I found it enjoyable. It tackled those issues surprisingly well, at least in an interesting way. But sadly, once the story arc was over, nothing changed. The girl involved quickly became a minor character and nothing else happened.
Moving on to the actual issue at hand, this book is fiction. It’s romantic fiction but even fiction needs some sort of realism. The romance seen in this manga is so unrealistic that it is frustrating, especially towards the end. It just felt as if every character was so disconnected and had zero amount of selfishness. They were too “perfect”. However, perfect isn’t the word I would use to describe it. They are nowhere near perfect.
The manga had an ending that was similar to the hit Manga, Erased, but Erased does it right. I’m not going to spoil Erased but just know a lot of people were upset about that for different reasons. Regardless of why people were upset about it, the ending was realistic. It made perfect sense that you could be angry at it but couldn’t deny that you would do the same.
But what happens in Domestic Girlfriend? Why is everyone so annoyed about it?
Well, to summarise it. The main character loves the teacher’s sister (the girl he slept with) so much that he wants to get married to her. How romantic! But, sadly a creepy stalker ex-boyfriend of the Teacher causes her to end up in a coma, oh no! The main character is conflicted and decides that he still loves the teacher and breaks up with the girl he is going to marry. The girl is ok with this and accepts it. Also, did I mention the two of them were going to have a child?
The main character, and the girl he slept with in chapter 1, were going to have a child. There were many ups and downs, but in the end, they ended up loving each other to the point of having a child. But he changed his mind and she was ok with that.
Seriously?
Yes. It’s that dumb.
The main character breaks up with the girl he had been with for almost the whole manga, to get together with the girl he truly loved, all because she ended up in a coma. I’m not going to go into any more detail, but it just comes across as so unrealistic and laughable. You can’t help but laugh out loud at how stupid it is. The author must have had some dream from God claiming to smite them if they didn’t end it this way, because there is no way someone who claims to be a writer could create something so laughable.
Personally, I would have had it so that the two had the kid and ended up together with the coma girl waking up and being happy for them because she was happy for them before she ended up in a coma. (yes, in the Manga she was happy for them before she entered the coma. the main character is the person who caused all this)
That’s what most people thought it was going to be. No one expected the most selfless act ever thought about sacrificing your own eternal happiness so your coma sister can marry the dad of your child (Arguably, it is original, only because everyone knew how dumb it was that they couldn’t bring themselves to write such a story).
I would like to point out, that I do remember some of the character’s names, but I just thought that calling them ‘coma person’ was funny. I mean it in no rude way and I did really enjoy the manga up to the end. It just felt so disconnected from reality. How no one, literally no one, questions the idea of the two happy couple breaking up so he could marry the coma girl when she wakes up is so stupid. There are definitely tons of people that would give it weird looks and at least try to convince them that this isn’t what they want.
This brings me to my final point, what they want.
It’s hard to write and explain what a character wants, but in this case, the main character may as well have buttons that are pressed which change his needs and wants because this dude is so sure/unsure of what he wants that it literally felt as if he just one day felt like it without zero reason. Even the readers cannot understand his decision!
It just makes no sense? Everything was pointless. The whole 200+ chapters meant nothing. His journey of growth was pointless. He did everything in the manga for nothing.
Nothing changed. He loved his teacher, grew older, and married her. That’s what happened.
You could do that in one chapter, the rest is filler.
Remove the sister, and remove any of the Main character’s other love interests. Remove the main characters’ friends.
Nothing changed.
Nothing important happened.
If he was always going to end up with her, why have any of it?
If he ended up with the younger sister, that he had a child with, then that would at least mean the story went somewhere.
I’m going to end this post here because the coma part is so dumb and frustrating that just remembering it makes me rage.
Regardless of everything I have said above, it is better than Rent-a-Girlfriend (Kanojo, Okarishimasu).
Thanks for reading, been a while since I posted here but I wanted to talk about the ending. I did really enjoy Domestic Girlfriend. But, I’m a tough critic and it did ruin my score for it. It’s not the only thing I’ve read with a trash ending, as I could easily talk about some other stuff. But overall, It was good. Domestic Girlfriend is easily a 7/10 or 8/10 (if you stop before the last few chapters)
But if you add in the final chapters it’s probably a 5/10 or even a 3/10. I did like the last panel though. Having him write a book about their story and naming it “Domestic Girlfriend” did catch me by surprise (but that’s because I’m dumb and didn’t expect it).
Anyway, to end. Thanks again. Sorry, there have been no posts. Been busy with stuff. The above probably is a bit messy cause I’m literally writing this without checking it over. But thanks again.

I started the manga knowing the ending (spoils makes me nothing) because I wanted to see the construction of the relationships. Progressively, I finished to love Rui, because she changed so much in a good way (and recognized when she was turning in a jealous girlfriend what makes her more mature) and I hoped that the ending will not be so sad for her. After all, we must to follow Natsuo and we should be happy that he will be anyways with a girl he loves(d). But the thing is that we dont know how the story ends for Rui, with her happiness, how she was capable to hide her love, how she will continue her life without Natsuo as a lover. It is annoying in a certain way, even if Hina deserve to be happy too, but I feel she deserved it not because their love is deserved it, but because of all she made for Natsuo (and Rui), like a gift or a reward. I enjoyed a lot the manga but the ending makes me a little be sad because it destroys in a certain form all the long built relationship between Rui and Natsuo. That’s all. (sorry for my english by the way).
