Writing my web novel: ‘This Meddling World’

Although the final chapter went up back in September, just like with Continuous school I wanted to talk about This Meddling World.

I briefly talked about it on twitter but I’ll go into more detail and maybe think of some other stuff to say.

Before we start, if you haven’t read it and don’t want to be spoiled, stop what you are doing, and read it with this link as there will be large spoilers:

UPDATE: For the second anniversary I rereleased This Meddling World as a physical book alongside an eBook on Amazon. Both these versions were updated to fix spelling mistakes, add more to the story and just make it better overall. Some stuff I say in this post may not relate to the new version, but I’m keeping this post as it’s part of the ‘museum’.

Alright, let’s get into it!

So, it was always going to be short. It never was going to be super long as I felt like having tons of stories would be overkill. I wanted it to be short and impactful. It was always going to end the way it did. From the beginning, it was planned to end that way.

The first three chapters were planned out pretty close together. After that, it was hard to plan chapters. I tried not to over plan and just write in the moment. I knew that I wanted to bring back Scarlett in the last chapter and different from before.

The idea of a god dying if they saved a human was never going to be in it but I needed a way to make it so Matthew could die.

There is only 1 chapter from Matthew’s point of view and it was originally only meant to be the last one from his point of view. But there were difficulties with writing it so I just made it third person.

The character of Matthew is a bit of a complicated one. He’s someone who lost a major part of his life and couldn’t understand why it happened. I had trouble when writing him but I think he turned out well.

Chapter 7 is my favourite chapter as Sarah is my favourite character. I enjoyed writing Sarah’s character and even was sad at the end of writing it. It’s also harsh for Phoebe who lost both her friends so suddenly.

Although all chapters were meant to feature someone who had died, not all do. I wanted to try and explore what could possibly be. Chapter 5 is about someone who has already died and won’t move on to the afterlife, and chapter 8 is just about Matthew trying to uncover what his sister loved.

I did have some confusion when writing the backstory. If you come across something that contradicts something else then it’s a mistake. I had trouble writing the back story as I needed more of a reason for Matthew and his sister to be hated by his parents and in doing so I probably made an error somewhere. Thinking back about it, his sister was never meant to be a character but plans change.

There was one chapter that was scrapped. An early chapter 4 was about a guy who was wrongly arrested and ended up killing himself because of it. I don’t remember why I scrapped it, I think I had trouble trying to fit Matthew into it.

I think that’s all for This Meddling World. It was only 10 chapters but I enjoyed writing it. Although I could probably write it better if I did it again I’m happy with it (maybe one day I might try and write it again). It was just a little something that I wanted to write and publish alongside my other stories.

Thanks for reading, as always make sure you follow, comment, do whatever you want as it helps me.

And I hope you’ll look forward to whatever else I have planned (whatever it this)
